PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a significant development for Pennsylvania healthcare, leading health system Prime Healthcare recently announced plans to transition its two Pennsylvania hospitals to nonprofit status. This transition, scheduled for the summer of 2024, will be managed by the Prime Healthcare Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity.

The Philadelphia-based Roxborough Memorial Hospital, and Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, PA, will convert to nonprofit hospitals under the Prime Healthcare Foundation umbrella. This move ensures all three Prime Healthcare hospitals in Pennsylvania operate as nonprofits, enhancing unity and community focus.

Since its inception in 2006, the Prime Healthcare Foundation has made a substantial impact across the United States. With a portfolio inclusive of 14 hospitals located in California, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, the foundation has provided over $3 billion in charity care. Celebrated for its quality care, health equity, social responsibility, and price transparency, the Foundation holds a noteworthy record, with its hospitals named among the nation’s “100 Top Hospitals.”

According to Sonia Mehta, MD, CEO, and Chief Medical Officer of Prime Healthcare Region II, the transition to not-for-profit status will enable a stronger community connection through health needs assessments. This move reinforces their commitment to providing high-quality, affordable healthcare to their community.

Beyond their mission for quality healthcare, Prime Healthcare has proven itself a devoted community investor. Its Pennsylvania hospitals have experienced nearly $100 million in advancements, including new emergency rooms, intensive care units, upgraded IT infrastructure, and more.

For example, Suburban Community Hospital, serving Montgomery County and the surrounding region for over 75 years, is now tailoring its services to meet specific community needs. With the focus on emergency services, the Hospital will provide a full-service 24/7 Emergency Department staffed with certified physicians and nurses.

With this transition to nonprofit status, Prime Healthcare reinforces its promise to community-centric healthcare. A commitment that can be seen in the accolades of patient safety and health equity that the group’s Pennsylvania hospitals, Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Suburban Community Hospital, and Lower Bucks Hospital have secured over the years.
