PowerBridge Expands Energy Patent Holdings With Enphase Deal

Business news

READING, PA — PowerBridge Networks has acquired more than 50 patents and patent applications from Enphase Energy, expanding its intellectual property portfolio in energy infrastructure technologies as competition intensifies around distributed power systems, energy storage and grid modernization.

The transaction transfers a portfolio of patents and related applications covering inverter technology, distributed energy systems, power management and grid-connected energy technologies, according to PowerBridge.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The deal marks PowerBridge’s latest effort to build a portfolio of technology patents that can be licensed across multiple industries. The company said the acquired assets include intellectual property related to intelligent energy management, inverter-based power conversion, distributed power architectures and system optimization technologies.

The portfolio includes U.S. patents, international filings and foreign patent rights in multiple markets.

The acquisition comes as utilities, energy companies and technology providers invest heavily in distributed energy resources, battery storage systems and software-driven grid management tools designed to improve efficiency and resilience.

“As energy infrastructure becomes increasingly software-driven, interconnected, and dependent on intelligent system control, these foundational innovations play an important role in enabling modern grid and storage environments,” Chief Executive Officer Donald Bitting said.

PowerBridge said it intends to pursue a licensing strategy for the portfolio rather than directly commercialize the technologies.

The patents were acquired from Enphase Energy, a major provider of solar microinverters and energy management technology. According to PowerBridge, the assets represent intellectual property that falls outside Enphase’s current strategic priorities.

The transaction follows PowerBridge’s acquisition of an enterprise networking patent portfolio from Avaya earlier this year, reflecting the company’s broader strategy of acquiring and managing intellectual property assets across communications, networking and energy technologies.

PowerBridge works with investment partners to acquire patent portfolios and generate revenue through licensing agreements. The Enphase portfolio will be held and managed by GridScale Solutions LLC, a Texas-based affiliate within the PowerBridge platform.

The acquisition adds to a growing market for intellectual property transactions as technology companies increasingly monetize non-core patent assets while focusing resources on strategic business lines.
