PHILADELPHIA, PA — Interstate 76, popularly known as the Schuylkill Expressway, is about to get a major makeover. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced a formidable $36.8 million project aimed at the night-time resurfacing and repair of almost five miles of this consequential interstate in Philadelphia. The comprehensive project also includes revamping of the associated on-and-off ramps, along with the repair of 23 bridges.
Starting from Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, motorists who use the Schuylkill Expressway can expect some disruption to their regular commute. Between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, one lane of the eastbound and westbound I-76 will be closed for temporary barrier installation. This closure, affecting the section between the I-676 and Montgomery Drive interchanges, may cause delays. Hence, road users are encouraged to factor in additional time when planning their journeys.
The extensive scope of this federally funded project will see PennDOT perform a multitude of repair and replacement work. This includes milling and overlay of the Expressway’s pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway); concrete base, shoulder and barrier replacements as necessary; minor grade adjustments at select locations; sign replacements; and new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips installations. In addition, bridge repairs are also slated under this project.
Local firm H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, has been hired as the general contractor for this project. PennDOT anticipates the completion of the entire project by the end of 2024. This widespread revamp of the Schuylkill Expressway strives to not only enhance commute efficiency but also address Philadelphia’s transportation safety and infrastructure lifespan.
