Philadelphia’s I-76 to Undergo Night Construction in $36.8M PennDOT Project

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A significant infrastructure project by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to take place on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway). The $36.8 million project aims to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, its associated on-and-off ramps, and 23 bridges in Philadelphia.

The construction, which will start on Monday, December 4, and run through Friday, December 8, is scheduled from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM each night. During these hours, a left lane closure will be in effect on eastbound or westbound I-76 just west of the Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo Interchange (Exit 342) for temporary barrier installation and traffic shift.

PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas due to potential backups and delays. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The extensive renovation will include milling and overlaying I-76 pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway). Concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement will be performed as required. Other improvements include minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replacement of damaged signs, new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, and bridge repairs.

H&K Group, Inc., a Skippack, PA-based firm, has been contracted for this project. The project is financed entirely with federal funds and is expected to conclude in late 2024.
