Philadelphia’s American Swedish Museum Celebrates 100 Years With Centennial Gala

ASHM Centennial Gala

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A century of Nordic heritage, cultural preservation and international friendship will take center stage in Philadelphia as the American Swedish Historical Museum celebrates its 100th anniversary with an evening of historic cuisine, live music, dancing and a glimpse into its future.

The museum will host its Centennial Gala on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m., bringing together supporters, cultural partners and distinguished guests to commemorate 100 years since its founding in 1926.

The celebration will feature a three-course dinner inspired by recipes from the past century, performances by musician Oskar Stenmark, dancing with DJ Robert Drake and exclusive auction experiences. Proceeds will support improvements intended to preserve the museum and enhance its accessibility, safety, and visitor experience.

Among the evening’s distinguished guests will be Sweden’s ambassador to the United States, Nicola Clase, and Finland’s ambassador, Leena-Kaisa Mikkola. Their participation reflects the museum’s longstanding role in celebrating Nordic heritage and strengthening cultural connections across the Atlantic.

The gala’s culinary program will offer guests an opportunity to experience history through food. Beginning with passed hors d’oeuvres and continuing through a three-course dinner, the menu will draw inspiration from recipes representing different periods of the museum’s first century.

Music will provide another connection between tradition and celebration. Stenmark will perform live during the evening, while Drake will provide music for dancing.

A particularly significant moment will come with the announcement of the first gifts to the museum’s Centennial Legacy Collection.

The new collection marks the beginning of the institution’s second century of collecting, with objects donated by influential Nordic Americans who have played a role in the museum’s history.

The contributions will help preserve personal and cultural connections to the Nordic American experience while expanding the museum’s holdings for future generations.

The Centennial Gala also serves a fundraising purpose. Proceeds will benefit the museum’s centennial improvement projects, including initiatives focused on accessibility, preservation, safety, and the overall visitor experience.

These investments are intended to help the institution continue welcoming visitors, protecting its collections and sharing Nordic American history as it enters its second century.
