PHILADELPHIA, PA — A powerful new story about family, legacy, and the ties that bind is set to take the stage this spring as Philadelphia Theatre Company unveils the world premiere of Wilderness Generation, the latest work from Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright James Ijames.

Opening April 15 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, the production brings audiences into a deeply personal family drama filled with humor, tension, and reflection, marking a major homecoming for Ijames in the city where his career first gained momentum.

Directed by Obie Award winner Taibi Magar, the play follows four cousins who reunite at their grandmother’s home in the Tidewater South to decide its future. Over the course of a single weekend, the family navigates questions of inheritance, identity, and what it truly means to hold onto the past—or let it go.

“James has written something deeply funny and profoundly generous,” said Magar. “He invites us into a family’s private world and trusts us to sit with both the discomfort and the love that lives there.”

Ijames, whose acclaimed play Fat Ham earned the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, said returning to premiere a new work in Philadelphia carries special meaning.

“Wilderness Generation is, at its heart, a family drama, and it feels especially meaningful to present it here, surrounded by artists I’ve grown alongside,” he said.

A Cast and Creative Team Rooted in Philadelphia

The production features a strong ensemble of returning collaborators and new voices, including Lindsay Smiling, Brenson Thomas, and Jessica Johnson, alongside Heather Alicia Simms and Abdul Sesay. Together, the cast brings to life a story that explores generational wealth, family history, and the complexities of intergenerational relationships.

Behind the scenes, a seasoned creative team supports the production, with scenic, lighting, sound, and costume designers contributing to a visually and emotionally immersive theatrical experience.

Beyond the stage, Philadelphia Theatre Company is expanding the impact of the production through community-based programming. Partnerships with organizations such as the African American Museum of Philadelphia, Temple University, and the Free Library of Philadelphia will offer discussions, workshops, and civic engagement opportunities tied to the play’s themes.

Student matinees and in-school workshops will also connect young audiences with the production, giving students a chance to engage with the story and its themes in meaningful ways.
