PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia’s bustling intercity bus station at 6th and Market Streets is set to relocate on Thursday, November 16, 2023, in a move aimed at easing congestion and improving passenger experience. The new location for the station will be at the corner of Spring Garden Street and Christopher Columbus Boulevard.
The decision to relocate was announced jointly by the City of Philadelphia and several intercity bus transportation providers, including FlixBus, Greyhound, Coach USA/MegaBus, and Peter Pan. The move is expected to address a raft of issues plaguing the existing station, ranging from passenger complaints to congestion problems affecting SEPTA bus routes and regular traffic on Market Street.
“The volume and nature of complaints leave the situation at 6th and Market Streets completely untenable,” said Mike Carroll, Deputy Managing Director for the Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability (OTIS). He added that this move is an urgent interim measure, while efforts are underway to find a permanent off-street location.
The new station is expected to serve as a temporary relocation through the first quarter of 2024. It will feature designated loading zones along several segments of Spring Garden Street, with Peter Pan, FlixBus, and Greyhound operating on the south curb and Megabus operating on the north curb under the I-95 viaduct adjacent to the Spring Garden Station exit for the Market Frankford Line station.
The City is also exploring options for customer service spaces, including ticketing, in the vicinity of these loading areas. Further updates will be provided on the Intercity Bus Loading & Drop-Off Relocation page.
The new location offers multiple transit connections, including SEPTA Market-Frankford Line’s Spring Garden station and bus stops for Route 43, Route 25, Route 57, and Route 5. The City of Philadelphia encourages all passengers to check their bus carrier’s website for further information regarding the relocation:
