PHILADELPHIA, PA — A new year brings new leadership at the helm of the Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD). As we welcomed 2024, First Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy recently stepped into the role of Acting Fire Commissioner, filling the shoes of outgoing Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel. This transition marks a significant chapter for the PFD and the city of Philadelphia.

The change comes as Thiel moves on to serve as the City’s Managing Director under Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. Thiel’s tenure as Fire Commissioner, spanning eight years during Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration, was marked by steadfast commitment to public safety and service.

Murphy, a PFD veteran with nearly four decades of experience, now takes up the mantle. His journey from joining the PFD 37 years ago with aspirations of being a good firefighter to now leading the department is testament to his dedication and continuous pursuit of knowledge and growth.

But why should Philadelphians take note of this change in leadership?

Firstly, Murphy’s extensive experience and intimate understanding of the department make him uniquely qualified to guide the PFD during this transition period. His tenure has seen him oversee all departmental operations, including fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials, aviation operations, EMS, and professional standards/diversity, equity & inclusion.

Secondly, his commitment to the well-being of his colleagues in the department stands out. In his own words, Murphy has never stopped looking out for his brothers and sisters in the department – a sentiment that speaks volumes about his leadership style and priorities. This focus on camaraderie and mutual support within the PFD will undoubtedly serve the department and the city well.

Finally, Murphy’s appointment comes at a critical time for the city, with the recent change in mayoral leadership. As the new administration sets its agenda, having an experienced hand at the helm of the PFD will be crucial in ensuring continuity and stability.

Meanwhile, Thiel’s move to the City’s Managing Director role offers an opportunity for him to apply his decades-long experience in fire safety, emergency management, and public service to a broader mandate. His vision of making Philadelphia a safer, cleaner and greener city, with economic opportunities for all, aligns well with the aspirations of many Philadelphians.

In the coming months, a search will be conducted for a permanent Fire Commissioner, as Murphy is set to retire later this year. Until then, Philadelphians can rest assured that their fire department is in capable hands, guided by a leader who has dedicated his career to protecting the city and its residents.
