PHILADELPHIA, PA — As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, a powerful new exhibition in Philadelphia is inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and engage with the evolving story of American democracy through the eyes of today’s artists.

Opening April 24 at The Print Center, America Today: Voices in Contemporary Print brings together more than 30 artists from across the country for a thought-provoking showcase that blends art, history, and civic dialogue. The exhibition transforms printmaking into a platform for exploring some of the most pressing issues of our time—from civil rights and social justice to political engagement and cultural identity.

Set in the heart of the city where America’s founding took shape, the exhibition creates a bridge between past and present, offering visitors a chance to see how democratic ideals continue to shift and take form in modern life.

Art That Sparks Conversation

Featuring 42 works, including prints and artist books, the exhibition is organized into thematic sections that explore topics such as political life, ancestral identity, migration, solidarity, and future visions.

The featured artists represent a diverse range of voices and perspectives, including internationally recognized names like Wendy Red Star, Howardena Pindell, Chakaia Booker, Kenny Rivero, Priscilla Hernandez, and Alex Callender. Each brings a distinct lens to the conversation, using printmaking as a way to respond to the current political and cultural landscape.

The exhibition also highlights collaborations with six leading print workshops from across the country, emphasizing the role of community-based art spaces in shaping meaningful dialogue.

Curator Lauren Rosenblum noted the significance of the moment, saying she hopes visitors “will value encountering contemporary art that similarly promotes self-advocacy and the inalienable right to equality for all living in the United States.”

More Than Just an Exhibition

In addition to the artwork itself, visitors can take part in a series of free public programs throughout the exhibition’s run, including artist talks and discussions with workshop representatives. These events are designed to deepen engagement and explore how art continues to influence civic conversation in a divided era.

An opening reception with participating artists and partners is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, offering an early opportunity for the community to connect directly with the creators behind the work.
