PennDOT Schedules Bridge Inspections, Anticipate Travel Delays in Philadelphia

Lane closures

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a comprehensive schedule for bridge inspections across Philadelphia, set to impact travel on Interstate I-76 and several key state highways. Motorists navigating the city next week should prepare for a series of travel restrictions designed to ensure the safety and integrity of the region’s infrastructure.

Starting Monday, April 8, through Friday, April 12, travelers will encounter a variety of lane closures at critical junctures along I-76 and other significant roadways. These measures, crucial for conducting thorough inspections, are poised to cause noticeable slowdowns across affected areas.

The inspection schedule kicks off on Monday with alternating lane closures on westbound I-76 at the bustling U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Interchange, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The following day, Tuesday, April 9, sees a sequence of moving right lane closures on ramps leading from westbound I-676 to key city streets, each scheduled for one-hour intervals throughout the midday.

Midweek adjustments shift focus to U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway), where northbound lanes will experience closures on Wednesday, April 10. The morning session targets the stretch between I-76 and the Broad Street interchanges, followed by an afternoon session affecting the segment from Ninth Street to the Fox Street/Henry Avenue interchanges.

On Thursday, attention returns to I-76 for lane closures aimed at both eastbound and westbound traffic, affecting stretches between the University Avenue and Passyunk Avenue interchanges, as well as the South Street interchange.

The week’s activities conclude on Friday, April 12, with a lane closure on 26th Street between the I-76 Interchange and Penrose Avenue, spanning the full workday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

PennDOT urges drivers to anticipate delays and allocate extra time when traveling through these designated work zones. The success of these inspections, integral to maintaining the safety and functionality of Philadelphia’s bridges, hinges on the cooperation and patience of the public. As always, the scheduling of these activities remains subject to change based on weather conditions.
