SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is embarking on a significant $63.7 million project that will bring much-needed repairs and improvements to nearly 17 miles of Interstate 476, from West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County to Ridley Township, Delaware County. The project includes the resurfacing of the interstate, the refurbishment of on-and-off ramps, and the repair of bridges.

Starting Sunday, January 7, through Thursday, January 11, motorists should prepare for single lane closures on various sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges. These closures, which will occur nightly from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, are necessary to facilitate bridge deck repair, inlet replacement, and tree clearing activities. PennDOT advises drivers to allow extra time for their journeys as delays and backups can be expected in the work areas. All these scheduled activities are, of course, dependent on the weather.

This extensive project will see PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, undertake a variety of crucial repairs and upgrades to improve the state of I-476. Among the planned works are the milling and overlaying of I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, the repair of 49 structures, and the improvement of 21 stormwater management basins to address existing rock slope stabilization issues.

Further improvements include the repair of existing sound walls, the replacement of inlets at select locations, and the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail. These enhancements aim to extend the design life of the interstate, improve ride quality and safety, and upgrade roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail, and signs that are currently in poor condition.

This project is fully financed by federal funds. The physical construction work on this project is expected to be completed by late 2025. As we head into a new week, and as work gets underway, drivers should be prepared for potential disruptions and plan their travels accordingly.
