DELAWARE AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES, PA — Construction will proceed next week on I-476 and southbound I-95 as part of a $10.4 million PennDOT initiative aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety. The project involves installing Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Queue Warning (QW) systems across 14.5 miles in Delaware and Montgomery counties.
Lane closures will be in effect from Sunday, May 4, through Thursday, May 8, between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM at these locations:
- Northbound I-476 between MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1) and Media Swarthmore (Exit 3)
- Northbound and southbound I-476 between U.S. 1 (Exit 5) and Marple Road overpass
- Northbound I-476 between I-95 and MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1)
- Southbound I-95 between Ridley Park (Exit 8) and I-476 (Exit 7)
Drivers should plan for delays as significant backups may occur during the closures. All scheduled work depends on weather conditions.
The project, carried out by Kuharchik Construction Inc., includes the installation of VSL systems, which will display adjustable speed limits based on real-time conditions such as traffic and weather. This technology helps optimize traffic flow and enhance safety by reducing speed variability.
Additionally, Queue Warning (QW) systems will display electronic messages warning drivers of significant slowdowns ahead. The goal is to reduce abrupt stopping and rear-end collisions, integrating these systems with PennDOT’s existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components.
The project also supports the development of PennDOT’s new Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC), where these advanced systems will be managed. Fully funded by federal dollars, this effort represents a step forward in improving road safety and efficiency across the region.
