PennDOT Completes $3.2 Million Safety and Mobility Improvement Project in Pennsburg and Red Hill

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the recent completion of a $3.2 million project aimed at enhancing safety and mobility on Route 29 (Main Street) between 10th Street and 11th Street in Pennsburg and Red Hill boroughs, Montgomery County.

The project involved significant improvements to the existing Route 29 bridge over the former Perkiomen Railroad. PennDOT’s contractor, H & K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, removed the superstructure and its upper portion, effectively eliminating the thru girder beams that were previously at the edge of the travel lanes. This modification is expected to reduce crashes and improve overall safety along the corridor.

In addition to the bridge modifications, the project also included the construction of sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. This feature will significantly improve pedestrian access along this busy route.

The project also addressed the issue of rear-end type crashes by re-aligning the vertical profile to enhance sight distance for drivers. Further safety enhancements included the installation of upgraded signage, guiderails, and pavement markings.

With the completion of this project, PennDOT hopes to see a reduction in traffic accidents and an improvement in pedestrian safety in the Pennsburg and Red Hill areas. The department continues to work on similar projects across the state, dedicated to ensuring safe and efficient transportation for all.
