PennDOT Bridge Construction to Impact Traffic on Route 420

traffic alert expect delays

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — Bridge construction activities will reduce northbound Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) to a single lane under a $35.8 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project. The project aims to replace the bridges that carry Route 420 over Darby Creek in Prospect Park Borough and Tinicum Township, Delaware County.

Weather permitting, from Monday, November 27, through Thursday, November 30, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, northbound Route 420 will be reduced to a single lane between I-95 and 4th Avenue for traffic signal changes. Motorists are also reminded that southbound Route 420 will be reduced to a single lane between 4th Avenue and I-95 until the new structures are complete.

During the long-term lane closure, oversized vehicles exceeding 10 feet wide will be prohibited from using southbound Route 420 within the project limits. Instead, drivers will be directed to use U.S. 13 (Chester Pike), Stewart Avenue, and Route 291 (Industrial Highway) to access Route 420 south of I-95.

Moreover, access to southbound Route 420 from Lazaretto Road will be prohibited for all motorists. They will be directed to follow the posted detour route to access southbound Route 420. Similarly, access to both northbound and southbound Route 420 from Lafayette Avenue at 2nd Avenue will be restricted for all motorists, excluding emergency vehicles. Detour routes will be posted for motorists to access Route 420.
