PennDOT Announces Nighttime Construction on I-76 for Major Resurfacing Project

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a significant construction project on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway). The project, valued at $36.8 million, involves the resurfacing and repair of nearly five miles of the interstate, including the associated on-and-off ramps and 23 bridges in Philadelphia.

Starting Monday, December 11, through to Friday, December 15, commuters can expect lane closures from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning. These closures will affect sections of both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the U.S. 1 South (Exit 339) and Spring Garden/Haverford Avenue (Exit 343) interchanges. The closures are necessary for barrier and traffic lane adjustments.

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time when traveling through these work areas as backups and delays may occur. It’s important to note that all scheduled activities are dependent on weather conditions.

The comprehensive project will see PennDOT mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway). Additional works include concrete base, shoulder and barrier repairs or replacements as needed, minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replacement of damaged signs, installation of new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips, and bridge repairs.

The general contractor for this project is H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA. The project has been financed entirely with federal funds. Completion of the entire project is anticipated for late 2024.
