PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced plans for bridge construction on 34th Street in Southwest Philadelphia. The project, aimed at replacing the deteriorating 34th Street bridge over a former CSX rail line and future Schuylkill River Trail, is set to commence soon.
Starting from Wednesday, January 3, through October 31, 2024, traffic on 34th Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Grays Ferry Avenue and the ramp from I-76 East to Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue.
Motorists are being advised to plan for extra time when traveling through the work area due to potential backups and delays caused by the construction. PennDOT’s decision to replace the poor condition bridge underscores its commitment to ensuring safe and reliable infrastructure for all road users.
The new bridge aims to not only improve travel conditions for motorists but also pave the way for the future Schuylkill River Trail.
