MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — PennDOT has completed major construction on a $14.6 million overhaul of the Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery Township, expanding the number of approach lanes and making other changes intended to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes at the Montgomery County junction.
The project increased the number of travel lanes approaching the intersection from 15 to 18. PennDOT’s contractor added through-lanes in both directions on Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road) and on southbound Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike).
The additional capacity represents the central operational change from the project, which also included upgrades to traffic signals and adjustments to signal timing.
Major construction is complete, but motorists may still encounter periodic single-lane closures during the next several weeks as crews finish remaining work, according to PennDOT.
The project also added sidewalks and ADA curb ramps and included new guiderail, stormwater drainage improvements, updated signs and pavement markings, driveway-access changes and erosion-control work.
The improvements target a complex intersection where Route 309 and Route 463 converge, with PennDOT citing both traffic movement and crash reduction as objectives of the widening.
