Pedestrian Fatality in Newark Under Investigation by Delaware State Police

NEWARK, DE — A tragic incident unfolded on Monday evening in Newark, Delaware, as a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. The Delaware State Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

On January 1, 2024, at approximately 6:38 p.m., a 2020 Jeep Compass was traveling westbound on Old Baltimore Pike near Torrington Way. For reasons yet to be determined, a 63-year-old pedestrian found herself in the path of the oncoming Jeep. The woman, who was wearing dark clothing and lacked any form of reflective equipment, was struck by the vehicle in the westbound lane.

Authorities have confirmed that the pedestrian, a Newark resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family and relatives.

The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman from New Castle, Delaware, remained unharmed. Following the crash, the roadway was closed for approximately three hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation into this unfortunate incident.
