NEW CASTLE, DE — A 63-year-old man died after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Christiana Road in a wheelchair Monday afternoon, according to Delaware State Police.
Police reported the crash occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m. July 20 at the intersection of Christiana Road and Pleasant Place.
According to the preliminary investigation, a Nissan Titan was traveling westbound on Christiana Road and had a green traffic signal as it approached the intersection. At the same time, police allege William Collins, 63, of New Castle, entered the crosswalk while using a wheelchair to cross from Pleasant Place toward Scottie Lane, where he was struck by the truck.
Collins was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Delaware State Police reported that he died July 21 from injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the Nissan, a 39-year-old Newark man, was not injured, according to investigators.
Police closed the roadway for approximately four hours while the scene was processed.
