PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia should brace for overnight delays next week as PennDOT advances paving tied to one of the largest highway reconstruction efforts in the region.
PennDOT said lane closures will be in place on southbound I-95 between the Cottman Avenue (Route 73) and Allegheny Avenue interchanges during overnight hours as part of the $355.3 million I-95 Section BR3 project. The work is associated with the widening and reconstruction of northbound I-95 from Wheatsheaf Lane to just north of Margaret Street.
The first round of closures is scheduled for Sunday night, December 21, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM Monday. Additional overnight lane restrictions will follow on Monday night, December 22, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM Tuesday. PennDOT warned motorists to expect backups and allow extra travel time through the work zone. All activities are weather dependent.
PennDOT also reminded drivers that the ramp from Aramingo Avenue at the Bridge Street Interchange to southbound I-95 remains closed for ramp construction. The reopening had been targeted for mid-December, but recent weather delays have pushed the timeline to late December.
The BR3 project is a major component of the long-term effort to modernize I-95 through Philadelphia, aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and structural integrity along one of the East Coast’s most heavily traveled corridors.
With multiple overnight closures planned and a key ramp still offline, motorists are urged to plan ahead and stay informed.
