PHILADELPHIA, PA — Motorists traveling through Northeast Philadelphia this week should prepare for significant overnight delays as construction crews shift traffic patterns on Interstate 95 near the Bridge Street Interchange ahead of a major reconstruction milestone.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: Interstate 95, Cottman Avenue Interchange, Bridge Street Interchange, Longshore Avenue ramp
- Dates: Wednesday, May 27, through Friday, May 29
- Times: 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night
- Reason: Traffic shift preparations, barrier installation, lane marking work, and barrier repairs
PennDOT said the overnight work will support a major traffic shift that moves southbound I-95 traffic onto newly rebuilt lanes between Carver Street and Margaret Street as part of the ongoing interstate widening project in Northeast Philadelphia.
Drivers should expect lane restrictions and ramp closures throughout the work zone, especially between the Cottman Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges.
On Wednesday, May 27, a single lane closure will be in place on I-95 in both directions between the Cottman Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 8:00 PM through 5:00 AM Thursday morning.
Also on Wednesday night and again Thursday night, the Longshore Avenue ramp to I-95 South at the Cottman Avenue Interchange will be closed. Drivers will be directed to travel south on New State Road, south on Tacony Street, and south on Aramingo Avenue to reach the I-95 South ramp at the Bridge Street Interchange.
On Thursday, May 28, alternating double lane closures will affect I-95 in both directions between the Cottman Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 8:00 PM through Friday morning.
The Cottman Avenue ramp to I-95 South also will close Thursday night. Drivers will again be detoured using New State Road, Tacony Street, and Aramingo Avenue to access I-95 South at Bridge Street.
On Friday, May 29, overnight double lane closures will affect northbound I-95 between the Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue interchanges for barrier repairs. The Bridge Street ramp to I-95 North also will close.
Drivers traveling northbound will be directed to use Tacony Street, New State Road, and Milnor Street to reconnect with I-95 North.
PennDOT warned that heavy backups and delays are likely throughout the construction zones and detour routes. All scheduled work remains weather dependent.
The overnight operations are part of PennDOT’s $267.9 million I-95/BS2 project, which includes reconstruction and widening of I-95 between Margaret Street and Carver Street, replacement of the interstate bridge over Fraley Street, and construction of a new Bridge Street Interchange.
Following this week’s traffic shift, crews will begin preparing the median area for another traffic change expected later this summer as northbound reconstruction work begins.
