PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers traveling through Northeast Philadelphia should prepare for overnight detours next week as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) continues major reconstruction work on I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
On Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the southbound collector-distributor lane to southbound I-95 at the interchange will be closed. During these closures, motorists entering southbound I-95 from Aramingo Avenue near Margaret Street must exit at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange, turn right onto Aramingo Avenue, and then right onto Adams Avenue to rejoin southbound I-95.
Importantly, travelers on mainline southbound I-95 heading to Aramingo Avenue or New Jersey via the bridge will retain access to those ramps.
This work is part of PennDOT’s $355.3 million project to reconstruct and improve a major stretch of northbound I-95 between Wheatsheaf Lane and Margaret Street. The project includes replacing three bridges and rehabilitating two ramps at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
The overnight barrier removal marks a key step in preparing for a temporary traffic pattern scheduled to begin this fall. Under the upcoming configuration, six lanes of traffic in both directions will shift to the west side and center of the highway to allow for northbound reconstruction. Ahead of this shift, PennDOT crews are repaving the southbound shoulder and removing the median divider to create a safer, more efficient work zone.
Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and remain alert for changing traffic patterns and detours in the area as work progresses. All activities are weather dependent.
