Overnight Construction on I-476 Aims to Enhance Roadway Safety and Quality

Traffic Alert

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has embarked on a significant $63.7 million initiative designed to resurface, repair, and enhance nearly 17 miles of Interstate 476. This comprehensive project, stretching from the Schuylkill Expressway in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County, aims to improve the interstate’s overall condition, including its on-and-off ramps and bridges.

Scheduled for the week of April 21 through April 26, motorists can expect night-time lane closures on both northbound and southbound sections of I-476. Specifically, lanes will be closed from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM for milling, paving, and concrete patching operations. The affected northbound sections span from the Route 3 (Upper Darby/Broomall) interchange to I-76 (Philadelphia/Valley Forge), while southbound closures will occur between I-76 and I-95 interchanges.

Additionally, bridge repair work will necessitate a daytime single lane closure with flagging on Darby Road in Haverford Township, Delaware County, from April 24 to April 26, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

Travelers are advised to allocate additional time for their journeys through these areas to account for potential backups and delays. All scheduled work is contingent upon suitable weather conditions.

This expansive project includes milling and overlaying I-476’s travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, repairing 49 structures, enhancing 21 stormwater management basins to address rock slope stabilization issues, repairing sound walls, replacing selected inlets, and installing new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail.

The primary goal of this endeavor is to extend the interstate’s design life while improving ride quality and safety for motorists. Additionally, it aims to ameliorate the condition of various roadside elements, such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, and slope stabilization features, which are currently in poor condition.
