PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that a full overnight closure is scheduled next week on southbound Interstate 95 in Center City Philadelphia as work continues on the $329 million I-95 CAP project. The effort will expand and replace the covered section of the interstate between Chestnut and Walnut streets.
Weather permitting, the closure will take place Tuesday, November 4, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. During this period, both southbound I-95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 to southbound I-95 will be closed between the I-676 Central Philadelphia/Callowhill Street (Exit 22) and Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) interchanges for ramp construction.
Motorists traveling south on I-95 will be detoured via I-676 (Exit 22) to Callowhill Street, then follow a local route using 6th Street, Race Street, and Columbus Boulevard to rejoin I-95 at the E. Morris Street/Water Street on-ramp. Eastbound I-676 drivers will be redirected to exit at 6th Street, turn left onto Race Street, and turn right onto Columbus Boulevard to access the same ramp.
PennDOT warns that heavy traffic and delays are likely throughout the closure and encourages drivers to plan alternate routes or allow extra travel time. All work is weather dependent.
The I-95 CAP project aims to enhance traffic flow, reconnect neighborhoods, and create new public space above the interstate in Philadelphia’s central waterfront area.
