Nighttime Roadwork on I-476 Promises Delays and Backups Amid $63.7 Million Improvement Project

Traffic Alert

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — Night owls and late-night commuters, brace yourselves for potential traffic disruptions next week on Interstate 476. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that inlet replacement and tree clearing operations will be taking place as part of a colossal $63.7 million project aimed at repairing and improving nearly 17 miles of the interstate.

From Monday, January 15, through Thursday, January 18, between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM the following morning, single lane closures will be in effect on various sections of both northbound and southbound I-476. The affected areas span between the I-76 (Philadelphia/Valley Forge) and Route 3 (Broomall/Upper Darby) interchanges. Motorists are advised to factor in extra time for their travels, as backups and delays may occur. Naturally, all scheduled activities are contingent on weather conditions.

This ambitious project will see PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc., of Skippack, PA, undertake extensive repairs and improvements. These include milling and overlaying I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, performing repairs on 49 structures, improving 21 stormwater management basins, repairing existing sound walls, replacing inlets at select locations, and installing new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail.

The project aims to extend the design life, improve ride quality and safety, and enhance the current condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail, and signs that are currently in poor condition.

Funded entirely by federal dollars, this project is expected to reach physical completion by late 2025.
