Nighttime Repairs Scheduled for I-76 Schuylkill Expressway

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that nighttime bridge repair, milling, and paving operations on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will take place next week as part of a $37.9 million improvement project. The extensive work will resurface nearly five miles of the interstate, repair ramps, and address more than 20 bridges in Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.

The planned operations will occur from Monday, May 12, through Thursday, May 15, between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM each night. During this time, lane closures and detours will impact motorists in both directions along I-76 between the U.S. 1 (City Avenue) and I-676 interchanges. Specific ramp closures and detours include the following details:

  • Monday, May 12: Ramps to and from eastbound I-76 to U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will close overnight. Drivers will need to use westbound I-76 to access U.S. 1.
  • Tuesday, May 13: Ramps to and from eastbound I-76 to Girard Avenue will be closed. Motorists will be directed onto westbound I-76 to reach Girard Avenue.
  • Wednesday, May 14: The ramp from westbound I-76 to Girard Avenue will be detoured. Drivers can use eastbound I-76 to access Girard Avenue.
  • Thursday, May 15: The ramp from U.S. 1 (City Avenue) to eastbound I-76 and northbound U.S. 1 will be closed. Drivers should use westbound I-76 and exit at Belmont Avenue to access eastbound I-76.

PennDOT advises motorists to plan for additional travel time while navigating the work zones, as backups and delays are expected throughout the scheduled repairs. These operations are weather dependent and may be adjusted accordingly.
