Nighttime Repairs on I-476 to Cause Delays for Motorists

Traffic Advisory

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — Motorists navigating Interstate 476 should brace for nighttime delays this week, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) rolls out a lane closure set to impact travel in both directions. The closure, part of a sprawling $63.7 million effort to rejuvenate nearly 17 miles of the interstate, will take place from Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5, between the hours of 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

The project stretches from the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) interchange in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to the I-95 interchange in Ridley Township, Delaware County. It aims to resurface, repair, and improve the interstate’s travel lanes, shoulders, associated ramps, and bridges.

During the specified nights, various sections of I-476 will see a lane closure affecting traffic heading both toward Philadelphia/Chester and Philadelphia/Valley Forge. PennDOT has issued a warning to drivers to expect backups and suggests allocating extra travel time when passing through the designated work zones. As with all outdoor construction, the schedule is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

The scope of the project is extensive, including milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, enhancing 21 stormwater management basins for rock slope stabilization, fixing existing sound walls, replacing inlets at select locations, and installing new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail.

These improvements are designed not only to extend the design life of the interstate but also to significantly enhance ride quality and safety. Additionally, they aim to address the current poor condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, and slope stabilization measures.
