Nighttime Lane Closures to Impact I-95 Girard Point Bridge Traffic

Travel Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia drivers, take note: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of nighttime lane closures on the Interstate 95 Girard Point Bridge that will likely lead to backups and delays this week. From Wednesday, April 3, through Friday, April 5, between 7:30 PM and 5:00 AM the following morning, travelers heading northbound between Penrose Avenue (Route 291) and Broad Street (Route 611) should brace for slower traffic.

This disruption is part of a broader bridge improvement initiative aimed at performing high-priority repairs on several key structures along interstates across the region. The Girard Point Bridge, a critical artery for Philadelphia’s commuters, is receiving much-needed attention to ensure its continued safety and functionality.

The scope of the repairs is extensive, covering the replacement of rocker bearings, frozen sliding plate bearings, and deck expansion joints. Additionally, the project involves cleaning and painting steel beams, repairing substructure concrete, and reconstructing bearing pedestals. This comprehensive approach underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity of such significant infrastructure.

Beyond the bridge itself, the project also includes the replacement of high mast light poles along the I-95 corridor in both Philadelphia and Delaware counties, further contributing to the safety and navigability of this crucial highway.

Driscoll Construction Company, Inc., a Philadelphia-based firm, has been tapped as the general contractor for this ambitious project, which is financed entirely with federal funds. As work gets underway, PennDOT urges motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time when traveling through the affected area. With all activities weather-dependent, drivers should stay alert to potential schedule changes.
