PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for a significant nighttime construction operation on the eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), a key segment of Philadelphia’s transportation network. This initiative is part of a comprehensive $36.8 million project aimed at revitalizing nearly five miles of the interstate, including the refurbishment of on-and-off ramps and 23 bridges across the city.
Scheduled from Monday, April 22, through Friday, April 26, the construction will necessitate a lane closure between the Belmont Avenue and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night. Motorists are being cautioned to expect potential delays and are encouraged to allocate additional travel time when navigating through this section of the expressway.
This ambitious project encompasses a wide array of improvements designed to enhance the safety and durability of I-76. Among the scheduled tasks are the milling and overlaying of pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway), extensive repairs and replacements of concrete bases, shoulders, and barriers, as well as upgrades to existing inlets for better drainage.
Furthermore, the initiative will see the replacement of damaged signs, the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips, alongside crucial bridge repairs. These enhancements aim to significantly improve the driving experience for the thousands of commuters who rely on the Schuylkill Expressway daily.
The H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, has been contracted to execute this project, which is funded entirely by federal resources. Completion of the physical construction work is anticipated by late 2024, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Pennsylvania’s highway infrastructure.
As these activities are subject to weather conditions, motorists are advised to stay informed on the latest updates and plan their commutes accordingly.
