Nighttime Construction on Schuylkill Expressway Promises Improved Road Conditions by Late 2024

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a major construction project set to begin next week on Interstate 76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway. The $36.8 million project, financed entirely with federal funds, aims to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, along with associated ramps and 23 bridges in Philadelphia.

From Monday, February 19, through Friday, February 23, motorists should anticipate lane closures from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM on both eastbound and westbound I-76, specifically between the I-676 and Montgomery Drive interchanges. The closures are necessary for temporary paving, barrier installation, and a traffic pattern shift. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel due to potential backups and delays in the work zones. All scheduled activities are subject to weather conditions.

The extensive project, contracted to H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, involves numerous improvements. PennDOT will mill and overlay the pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway). The plan also includes concrete base, shoulder, and barrier repairs and replacements as needed.

Additionally, minor grade adjustments will be constructed for existing inlets at select locations, and damaged signs will be replaced. New pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips will be installed, and bridge repairs will be performed.

The Schuylkill Expressway project is slated for completion in late 2024.
