PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia drivers, be prepared! The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced nighttime construction next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway). This work is part of a $36.8 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the interstate, including associated on-and-off ramps and 23 bridges in Philadelphia.
From Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, expect a lane closure from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the I-676 and Montgomery Drive interchanges. This closure is necessary for the installation of temporary barriers, which are safety features used to control the flow of traffic around a construction zone.
Motorists should anticipate backups and delays during these hours. With one less lane available for use, congestion is likely to occur, especially if there are many vehicles on the road. PennDOT advises allowing extra time for travel through the work areas.
The scope of this project extends beyond just resurfacing. PennDOT will also perform concrete base, shoulder, and barrier repair and replacement as needed, construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replace damaged signs, install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips, and carry out bridge repairs.
H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Completion of the entire project is projected for late 2024.
So, when planning your nighttime travels, remember to factor in these possible delays. As always, drive safely, Philadelphia!
