PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced nightly construction activities scheduled for next week as part of a $37.9 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway). The work will include improvements to associated ramps and over 20 bridges across the City of Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.
Beginning Monday, May 19, through Thursday, May 22, lane closures will occur nightly from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM in both directions of I-76 between the U.S. 1 (City Avenue) and I-676 interchanges. Numerous ramps will also be closed for repairs and milling operations during these hours.
Key ramp closures include the following:
- Monday, May 19: The ramp to eastbound I-76 from U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will be closed and detoured.
- Tuesday, May 20: The Montgomery Drive ramp to westbound I-76 will be closed, with a detour via Belmont Avenue and Girard Avenue.
- Wednesday, May 21: Lane closures will affect the ramps connecting U.S. 1 to eastbound I-76 and both directions of I-76 to U.S. 1.
- Thursday, May 22: The ramps between eastbound I-76 and Girard Avenue will be closed.
Additionally, on Friday, May 23, the ramp from Girard Avenue to westbound I-76 will be inaccessible between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, with a detour route provided via Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive.
“Significant backups and delays will occur,” PennDOT emphasized, advising drivers to allow extra time when traveling through the affected zones. The agency also reminded motorists that all scheduled work is weather dependent.
Drivers are urged to remain cautious and alert while navigating construction zones for their own safety and that of the workers.
