PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has outlined a comprehensive schedule for pavement repairs on the southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway), signaling a significant phase in the ongoing effort to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct. This $100.6 million project, designed to enhance the viaduct that spans over SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood, will necessitate temporary traffic adjustments.
Starting Monday, April 22, through Friday, April 26, travelers can expect single lane closures from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning. The affected segment stretches from Fox Street to Interstate 76, a crucial artery for nightly commuters and transport services alike.
The repair initiative will intensify from Friday, April 26, continuing every weekend until Monday, May 13. During this period, a consistent single lane closure will be enforced, with periodic double lane closures taking effect from 6:00 PM on Fridays to 5:30 AM on Mondays. This extended work schedule aims to minimize disruptions during peak travel hours, focusing the bulk of construction activity during off-peak times.
Motorists are encouraged to factor in additional travel time when navigating the work zone, as traffic congestion and delays are anticipated. PennDOT has emphasized that the timing of these repairs is subject to change based on weather conditions, underscoring the importance of staying informed on the latest project updates.
The goal of these lane closures is twofold: to facilitate the necessary repairs to the southbound lanes of the Roosevelt Expressway and to apply an epoxy overlay. This treatment is expected to significantly extend the lifespan of the pavement between the Wayne Avenue Viaduct and I-76, contributing to safer and more reliable travel through this vital corridor of Philadelphia.
