PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia commuters take note: the final stages of a significant infrastructure project will impact nighttime travel on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) next week. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that as part of the $100.6 million effort to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct—a critical overpass spanning the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood—there will be lane closures to facilitate the installation of overhead signs.

From Monday, April 8, through Friday, April 13, travelers can expect periodic single-lane closures on both directions of the expressway. Southbound lanes between Wyoming Avenue and Fox Street will see closures from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning. Similarly, northbound traffic between Fox Street and Wyoming Avenue will face disruptions starting at 7:00 PM until 5:30 AM.

These closures are essential for PennDOT’s contractor to carry out post-construction activities, marking the culmination of the Wayne Junction Viaduct project. This initiative is not just a routine maintenance effort but a comprehensive rehabilitation of a viaduct that serves as a vital artery for Philadelphia’s transportation network, running above some of the city’s key areas.

While the end of the construction work is in sight, drivers should prepare for potential delays during these hours and consider alternative routes if possible. The scheduled lane closures are crucial steps to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the expressway, promising smoother and more reliable commutes upon completion.

As the project nears its conclusion, PennDOT asks for the public’s patience and understanding, reminding everyone that these temporary inconveniences are in service of substantial, lasting improvements to one of Philadelphia’s most important transportation structures.
