Night Paving on I-76 to Slow Philadelphia Commutes

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia motorists should prepare for nighttime delays on the Schuylkill Expressway this week, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) undertakes essential paving operations. The work is part of a broader effort to maintain and improve one of the city’s key thoroughfares.

From Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 3, eastbound Interstate 76 will see a lane closure from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM between the Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive interchanges. This necessary inconvenience will allow for comprehensive milling and overlay work on the pavement, extending from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway).

PennDOT advises drivers to expect traffic backups and allocate additional time for their nighttime journeys through this section of I-76. The progress of this operation hinges on weather conditions, with any changes to the schedule dependent on favorable forecasts.

The extensive contract encompasses not only the resurfacing of the expressway but also concrete repairs, shoulder and barrier replacements, inlet grade adjustments, and sign replacements. New pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips are also on the docket, alongside bridge repairs to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the expressway.

Skippack’s H&K Group, Inc., has been named the general contractor for this project, funded entirely by federal dollars. Physical construction is projected to conclude in late 2024, promising smoother and safer travel for all who rely on the Schuylkill Expressway.
