NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police arrested 35-year-old Chad Johnson of Newark, Delaware, on gun and traffic charges following a crash investigation that occurred last Thursday in Newark.
On February 8, 2024, at approximately 12:29 a.m., a state trooper observed a motorcycle commit a traffic violation on Kirkwood Highway near Harmony Road. The motorcyclist allegedly made a U-turn in the roadway to bypass a partial road closure. When the trooper initiated a traffic stop, it’s alleged the motorcycle continued at high speeds in a reckless manner. The pursuit was discontinued shortly after, but the motorcyclist failed to navigate a curve and crashed.
The trooper identified the motorcyclist as Chad Johnson. Prior to Johnson being transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained from the crash, a search allegedly revealed a loaded handgun in his pocket. A computer inquiry indicated that Johnson, as a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Johnson was taken to Troop 2, where he was charged with several crimes including carrying a concealed firearm, possession of an unfinished firearm frame with no serial number, possession of a firearm by person prohibited for a prior felony violation, possession of ammunition by person prohibited for a prior felony violation, disregarding a police officer signal, driving while suspended, and additional traffic violations. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released after posting a $15,000 secured bond.
As this case continues to unfold, the information could change as more details emerge. It’s important to remember that the release of information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest does not constitute a declaration of guilt. Every suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
