DOVER, DE — The Delaware Public Archives (DPA) is set to spark a wave of nostalgia across The First State with its latest exhibit, “Memory Lane.” This unique showcase, opening in April 2024, invites Delawareans old and new to embark on a journey through the past, revisiting beloved but long-gone landmarks, eateries, and events that once defined local life.
“Memory Lane” brings together 75 rare, newly digitized and restored photographs capturing the essence of Delaware’s yesteryears. From the rocking nights at the Stone Balloon to the unique flavors of a muskrat meal at The Wagon Wheel, and the shopping sprees at Wanamaker’s, the exhibit aims to rekindle memories of places and experiences that have faded into history.
Stephen Marz, State Archivist and Director of the Delaware Public Archives, highlighted the exhibit’s purpose: “For many longtime residents of Delaware, places like Gino’s Hamburgers or the iconic Dinner Bell Inn are distant memories. Our goal with ‘Memory Lane’ is not only to reignite those forgotten moments but also to introduce these cherished local legends to our newer residents.”
Visitors to the exhibit can expect more than just a visual feast. A five-minute informative video will provide additional context and historical facts, enriching the experience. Moreover, attendees will receive a complimentary 16-page full-color booklet filled with photos and trivia about The First State, allowing them to take a piece of history home.
The inspiration for “Memory Lane” stems from the DPA’s highly popular social media feature, which has engaged audiences on Facebook and Instagram with snippets of Delaware’s past. By expanding this concept into a physical exhibit, the Archives aims to offer a more immersive and tangible exploration of the state’s heritage.
