Months-Long Overnight Shutdown on I-76 West Set to Snarl Center City Traffic

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A major construction phase on one of Philadelphia’s busiest corridors will bring months of overnight closures to I-76 West, promising significant travel disruption for commuters beginning December 7.

PennDOT announced that work to rehabilitate the Market Street bridges over Amtrak, the Schuylkill Expressway, the Schuylkill River Trail, and CSX Railroad will require I-76 West to be restricted and fully closed overnight between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges through June 1.

Under the schedule, I-76 West will be reduced to a single lane from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM Sundays through Thursdays, followed by a full shutdown from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Motorists will be detoured at 30th Street and routed along Schuylkill Avenue to reconnect with I-76 West or access I-676 East.

Crews will pause closures during the holiday period, with no overnight restrictions from December 21 through January 3, 2026.

The $148.9 million project includes structural rehabilitation of multiple Market Street bridges, including deck and sidewalk replacement, superstructure demolition, and new retaining walls. The long-term initiative aims to improve safety, extend the lifespan of the bridges, and modernize infrastructure along a key Center City gateway.

PennDOT warned drivers to expect heavy congestion throughout the work zone and along detour routes, urging travelers to plan ahead for delays.
