PHILADELPHIA, PA — Construction will continue next week on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) $148.9 million project to rehabilitate the Market Street bridges in Center City Philadelphia. The extensive effort encompasses multiple structural improvements over Amtrak, Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), the Schuylkill River Trail, and the CSX Railroad.
From Monday, May 19, through Friday, May 23, lane closures will be in place on Market Street in both directions between Schuylkill Avenue and 30th Street. Closures will occur daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as significant delays and congestion are expected. All scheduling remains weather dependent.
The project includes partial demolition and replacement of the superstructure on the Market Street bridge that spans Amtrak and I-76. Adjacent to this, the deteriorated deck and sidewalks of the Market Street bridge over the Schuylkill River will be replaced. On the east side of the river, the four-span Market Street bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad will be replaced with a single-span structure and retaining walls.
PennDOT’s scope of work also involves reconfiguring Market Street’s pavement between Schuylkill Avenue West and 23rd Street. The upgrades will produce two 10-foot-wide travel lanes in both directions, alongside turning lanes, wide sidewalks, and a two-way bicycle lane with concrete separators. A new bicycle signal will link the lane to facilities at 23rd Street, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist accessibility and safety.
Additional improvements include upgrades to traffic signals, enhancements to lighting systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) installations, and repair work to the east and west Schuylkill River walls. The staircase connecting the Schuylkill River Trail to JFK Boulevard will also be repaired to address settling issues.
The project, financed with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds, is being executed by Buckley & Company Inc., based in Philadelphia. Work on this critical transportation corridor aims to modernize infrastructure and better accommodate all modes of travel.
