Markley Street Bridge Rehabilitation: A Blend of Preservation and Innovation Amid Traffic Delays

Traffic Alert

NORRISTOWN, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has embarked on a multimillion-dollar mission to breathe new life into the historic Markley Street/Elm Street stone arch bridge in Norristown, Montgomery County. However, as the utility work picks up pace in this $7.8 million project, motorists are being warned to brace for potential traffic delays.

Starting Monday, February 12, through mid-March, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, drivers can expect periodic lane closures with flagging on Markley Street between Marshall Street and Spruce Street/Harding Boulevard. PennDOT advises road users to factor in extra time when traversing the work zone due to possible backups and delays. As always, these scheduled activities hinge on favorable weather conditions.

The bridge, a 123-foot-wide stone arch structure spanning Stony Creek, is undergoing substantial rehabilitation. PennDOT’s contractor, J. D. Eckman, Inc., is replacing the existing stone barriers with concrete core barriers. However, in a nod to the bridge’s architectural heritage, salvaged stone from the original structure will be used for the facing.

This blend of preservation and innovation extends beyond the bridge itself. The project also includes repairing the stone masonry and arch, repointing mortar joints, and installing scour protection. To lighten the load on the bridge, soil cover is being removed and backfilled with lightweight concrete fill. A brown painted guiderail will be added to the Markley Street approaches, enhancing both aesthetics and safety.

But the project isn’t just about the past — it’s also about making the bridge fit for the future. To improve pedestrian safety and streamline traffic flow, Markley Street will be reconstructed and widened at the bridge approaches. Pavement adjustments on the locally owned Elm Street promise smoother rides for motorists.

Road users can look forward to upgraded traffic signals, ADA-compliant curb ramps, clear pavement markings, and new signage. These enhancements aim to create a safer and more efficient crossing for the traveling public.

While navigating through work zones, motorists are reminded to stay alert and patient. Follow the instructions of flaggers, adhere to posted speed limits, and turn on your headlights if necessary. Avoid distractions like cell phones and always keep a safe distance from other vehicles, particularly construction equipment.
