PHILADELPHIA, PA — The roar of the crowd is coming back to the Manayunk Wall as professional cycling returns to Philadelphia after nearly a decade away, bringing with it a free neighborhood watch party packed with family activities, local business specials and all-day race-day energy.

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic will return Sunday, Aug. 30, reviving a sporting tradition that helped put Manayunk on the national and international cycling map. To mark the comeback, the Manayunk Development Corporation will host a family-friendly watch party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Main and Levering streets, where spectators can cheer riders as they tackle the neighborhood’s famous climb.

The event is open to all ages and will feature bike-themed crafts and activities including Design Your Ride Shades, helmet bedazzling, a tie-dye party and a Towpath scavenger hunt. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome.

At the center of the celebration is the Manayunk Wall, the steep climb on Levering Avenue that reaches grades of about 17% and became one of the most recognizable stretches in American road racing. For decades, thousands of spectators packed the hill to watch elite riders push through one of the race’s toughest sections.

The race originally debuted in Philadelphia in 1985 and ran for more than 30 years before pausing in 2016. Race Street Partners has brought the event back for 2026, restoring a tradition that became closely tied to Manayunk’s identity and business community.

A Full Neighborhood Celebration

Restaurants, cafés, bars and shops throughout Manayunk will join the festivities with early openings, specials, pop-ups and activities.

Love City Brewing and Sophie’s BBQ plan to open at 8:30 a.m., with Sophie’s serving breakfast sandwiches including brisket, egg and cheese and pork, egg and cheese.

AFC Fitness will host activities in the Levering Lot, including fitness challenges, giveaways and trial membership opportunities. City of Paws will set up cooling pools for dogs, while Orbit Gallery will display cycling-themed prints, including Charles Cushing’s iconic The Wall.

The Emporium by Lady Holiday will offer a $50 permanent jewelry special with a complimentary sports-themed charm, and Thrillerdelphia will provide crafts and beverages while supplies last.

“There’s no place quite like Manayunk on race day,” organizers said, reflecting the event’s longstanding role in bringing residents, businesses and visitors together.
