Major Safety Upgrades to Bethlehem Pike Set to Begin, Delays Expected

Traffic Advisory

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that construction is set to begin on Monday, March 25, for a series of safety improvements along a 1.9-mile section of Bethlehem Pike in Springfield and Whitemarsh townships, Montgomery County. The work will continue through October 15, promising long-term benefits but short-term traffic disruptions.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will convert a section of Bethlehem Pike from an undivided four-lane section to a three-lane section featuring a two-way left turn lane. This design aims to ease traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents related to left turns. Other planned improvements include modifying left-turn signal phasing, coordinating arterial signals, and installing pedestrian countdown timers at select locations to enhance pedestrian safety.

The project also includes adding retroreflective backplates to improve signal visibility and milling and overlaying pavement along the corridor. The Bethlehem Pike intersections included in this safety improvement project are Flourtown Shopping Center Driveway, Mill Road, College Avenue, Bysher Avenue, Wissahickon Avenue, Haws Lane, Montgomery Avenue, Sunnybrook Road, and Hillcrest Road.

Starting Monday, March 25, a weekday lane closure will be in place on Bethlehem Pike in both directions between Stenton Avenue/Paper Mill Road and West Valley Green Road. The closure will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily, and motorists should anticipate backups and delays.

Highway Materials, Inc. of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed entirely with federal funds. The physical construction is expected to wrap up this fall.

Motorists are advised to exercise patience and caution when navigating through these work zones. As always, all scheduled activities are weather dependent.
