Major Construction on U.S. 422 Set to Disrupt Traffic in Montgomery County

Traffic Alert

LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of construction activities on U.S. 422 as part of an extensive $83.6 million project aimed at reconstructing and enhancing approximately 2.1 miles of the expressway in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County. The project, which will also include bridge replacements between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road, is set to create significant traffic disruptions next week.

From Monday, April 22, through Thursday, April 25, drivers can expect periodic lane and shoulder closures on eastbound U.S. 422 between Keim Street and Evergreen Road from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for shoulder reconstruction. Additionally, westbound U.S. 422 will experience similar closures between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday, to facilitate shoulder reconstruction efforts.

Moreover, Sanatoga Road will see a lane closure with flagging between Linfield Road and High Street from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, due to bridge construction activities. Perhaps most disruptively, intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and paces are scheduled in both directions on U.S. 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday through Friday, to accommodate controlled rock blasting necessary for drainage construction.

These stoppages and pacing maneuvers are essential for ensuring the safety of both motorists and construction workers as crews undertake the critical task of excavating the area.

The comprehensive Section M1B project aims not only to reconstruct U.S. 422 on its current and new alignments but also to improve the expressway’s horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance, thereby enhancing overall travel safety. Key components of this initiative include the removal and replacement of a culvert at Sprogels Run and a single-span bridge over Porter Road with a new two-span structure. Additionally, the bridge that carries U.S. 422 over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will be reconstructed and widened, further contributing to the project’s goal of improved roadway conditions.
