Jefferson and Lehigh Valley Health Network to Merge, Creating an Integrated Care Delivery System

Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Jefferson and the Lehigh Valley Health Network (“LVHN”) recently announced plans to merge, creating a comprehensive integrated care delivery system that includes a national research university and an expanded not-for-profit health plan. The merger aims to boost the health and well-being of rural and urban communities across Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey through enhanced healthcare services and insurance offerings.

Both Jefferson and LVHN are mission-driven organizations with a strong foothold in population health management and quality-focused care services. Their combined resources will facilitate greater access to leading-edge healthcare services and health insurance benefits tailored to the unique needs of the communities they serve. The merger also promises to further strengthen their academic programs, particularly at Thomas Jefferson University, enhancing opportunities for clinical training and patient participation in clinical research.

Upon completion, the combined system will operate 30 hospitals and more than 700 care sites, supported by over 62,000 faculty, clinicians, and staff.

“The healthcare landscape and our communities’ needs are changing; it is critical leading systems evolve and make investments in the future of care and wellness,” said Joseph G. Cacchione, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Jefferson. The merger, he suggests, will allow both entities to meet the evolving needs of their diverse communities more efficiently and effectively.

The transaction is expected to close in 2024, subject to regulatory reviews and closing conditions. Until then, both Jefferson and LVHN will continue to operate as separate, independent entities.

Following the merger, Cacchione will remain as Chief Executive Officer of the Jefferson Enterprise. LVHN’s Nester will serve as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and President of the legacy Lehigh Valley Health Network, reporting directly to Cacchione. Dr. Baligh R. Yehia will assume the role of Executive Vice President/Chief Transformation Officer and President of the legacy Jefferson Health, also reporting directly to Cacchione. The integrated Board of Trustees and leadership team will comprise members from both systems.
