WILMINGTON, DE — A recent report commissioned by InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a leading company in mobile and video technology research and development, has identified High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) as the preferred codec in the streaming industry. The findings were released in a report titled, “Spotlight on HEVC: The Codec of Choice for the Video Streaming Industry.”

The comprehensive study delves into the development of HEVC, its role in providing high-quality video content, its rising application among leading streaming platforms, and its potential future in the rapidly advancing realm of video content delivery. The report emphasizes HEVC’s association with delivering High Definition (HD) and Ultra High Definition (UHD/4K) streaming video due to its lower storage demands and superior bandwidth efficiency.

Major streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, Disney, NBC, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are all utilizing HEVC for content delivery, according to the report. As 2023 is expected to mark a significant transition when UHD streaming subscriptions surpass standard HD, increased consumer demand is pushing the market towards more advanced codecs to support higher quality content.

The report also forecasts that the addressable market for HEVC-supported devices will expand to ten billion by 2030, indicating that the use of HEVC is set for significant growth.

Rajesh Pankaj, CTO of InterDigital, highlighted the multiple advantages of HEVC over its predecessor, Advanced Video Coding (AVC). He stated, “HEVC offers enhanced quality for consumers without increasing data and bandwidth requirements. This helps speed up the transfer of video and optimizes cloud storage costs for streaming service providers.”
