WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a technology research and development company, has entered into a groundbreaking collaboration with Concordia University’s Intelligent Next Generation Networking and Multimedia (IN2GM) Lab. This multi-year research and development initiative is set to offer graduate students a unique opportunity to delve into AI-enabled tools for the delivery of immersive media over 5G networks.

The partnership focuses on exploring novel media delivery paradigms, including the development of systems capable of efficiently transmitting high-quality, six degrees of freedom (6DoF), volumetric immersive media content across 5G networks. This endeavor aims to push the boundaries of how immersive content such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR), and metaverse applications are delivered and consumed.

InterDigital’s Research and Innovation (R&I) Lab in Montréal, which leads the company’s efforts in multimedia systems and contributes to global standards like MPEG, 3GPP, and IETF, will work closely with Concordia University’s Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science. Notably, Concordia’s Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) department is recognized among the top ten in Canada, boasting the country’s leading position in software engineering research, according to CSRankings.

The collaboration aims to design an end-to-end system for immersive media transport that encompasses media packaging, ingesting, delivery, and consumption, in accordance with the standards set by bodies such as the IETF, MPEG, and 3GPP.

Gaëlle Martin-Cocher, Senior Director at InterDigital, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Montréal’s prominence as a center for next-generation networks and AI/machine learning research. “Our collaboration with Concordia will leverage the excitement and expertise of the region to develop tools and solutions that support immersive content delivery worldwide,” she stated.
