ICYMI: Medicus Pharma Faces Clinical Test After Raising $90 Million

Medicus Pharma

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Medicus Pharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: MDCX) has raised approximately $90 million through equity and debt financing over three years to build a diversified drug-development portfolio, leaving the biotechnology company dependent on clinical results and potential licensing agreements to demonstrate returns amid share-price volatility.

The company, marking its third anniversary, said it is shifting toward precision oncology while continuing development programs targeting basal cell carcinoma, prostate cancer and other conditions. Its strategy centers on acquiring therapeutic assets with existing research foundations and advancing them toward clinical and regulatory milestones.

Medicus acknowledged that its portfolio expansion has coincided with stock-price volatility and a decline in its shares.

“We must make a concerted effort to explain more clearly, when we can, how the investments made to date position Medicus and support that explanation with measurable results,” the company said in its shareholder update.

The financing supported acquisitions, clinical development and operations following the company’s initial listing on the TSX Venture Exchange in October 2023 and its move to Nasdaq in November 2024.

Medicus is prioritizing CD228V, an investigational antibody-drug conjugate that targets melanotransferrin, a protein also known as CD228 that is associated with melanoma and expressed in several other solid tumors.

The treatment uses Pfizer’s vedotin linker-payload platform to deliver a cancer-killing agent through an antibody designed to recognize specific tumor cells.

Medicus intends to initially pursue patients with relapsed, refractory or immunotherapy-resistant melanoma, incorporating biomarker research to identify populations most likely to respond.

The company also sees potential applications in lung, head and neck, and esophageal cancers that express CD228.

CD228V remains in early development, however, and neither its effectiveness nor its potential safety advantages have been established. No approved treatment has validated CD228 as a therapeutic target.

The company is also advancing SkinJect, an investigational localized treatment for basal cell carcinomas in patients with Gorlin syndrome, a rare inherited disorder associated with recurrent skin cancers.

Medicus completed its SKNJCT-003 Phase 2 study and selected a 200-microgram dose for further evaluation.

The Food and Drug Administration subsequently authorized initiation of SKNJCT-005, a planned registrational study intended to generate evidence supporting a potential regulatory application.

Additional clinical testing and regulatory review will be required before SkinJect could reach the market.

A third development program, Teverelix, entered the portfolio through Medicus’ acquisition of Antev in August 2025.

The investigational gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist is being developed for potential applications in urology and women’s health, including prevention of acute urinary retention relapse and treatment of symptomatic endometriosis.

Medicus is also pursuing a partnership-led development strategy for advanced prostate cancer patients with elevated cardiovascular risk.

The company said it reduced the royalty rate associated with Teverelix following the acquisition, improving the asset’s underlying economics.

It recently submitted an optimized registrational protocol for advanced prostate cancer that would incorporate previously FDA-cleared dose-optimization work into a proposed integrated development program.

That approach remains subject to FDA review.

Medicus plans to concentrate spending on selected clinical and regulatory milestones while seeking licensing, co-development and other strategic agreements.

Such arrangements could provide funding without additional equity issuance and distribute development costs among partners, although the company cautioned that their timing, terms and completion remain uncertain.

The company’s next phase will depend on generating clinical evidence, securing development partners and managing the capital requirements of its expanded portfolio.

“The measure of our progress should be stronger clinical evidence, clearer development pathways, and transactions that support continued advancement,” Medicus said.
