PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers using the Schuylkill Expressway should prepare for two nights of closures and detours as bridge construction shuts down westbound Interstate 76 near Center City Philadelphia.

At a Glance

  • Roads Affected: Westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges
  • Dates: Wednesday, August 5, and Thursday, August 6
  • Times: 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning
  • Reason: Market Street bridge construction

Westbound I-76 will close overnight between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges. Drivers will be directed to exit at 30th Street and travel west on Schuylkill Avenue to reach the entrance ramps for I-76 West and I-676 East.

Motorists should plan extra time when traveling near the closure or along the detour because backups and delays are expected. Seek alternate routes when practical and remain alert for changing traffic patterns around 30th Street.

The work is weather dependent and may be postponed if conditions are unfavorable.

Travelers should also expect restrictions on Market Street, where the center lane between Schuylkill Avenue and 30th Street will remain closed through Thursday, August 20, for utility construction. Two lanes will remain open in each direction.

That utility work is preparing the area for the closure, demolition and reconstruction of the Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River. The approximately 14-month closure is scheduled to begin Monday, August 24, with additional detour information expected closer to the start of construction.

The overnight I-76 restrictions are part of a $148.9 million project to replace the Market Street bridges over Amtrak and the Schuylkill Expressway, redeck the bridge over the Schuylkill River and replace the bridge spanning the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad.
