DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — Drivers using I-476 and a nearby stretch of I-95 should prepare for overnight lane closures from Sunday, August 16, through Thursday, August 20, as PennDOT continues work on a $10.4 million traffic-management project designed to improve congestion response and roadway safety.

On southbound I-476, lane closures will affect the highway between the County Line Road overpass and U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) Interchange in Radnor Township, as well as between U.S. 30 and the West Chester Pike Interchange through Radnor, Haverford and Marple townships.
Additional lane closures will affect both northbound and southbound I-476 between the U.S. 1 (Media Bypass) Interchange and the Sproul Road overpass in Marple Township.
Farther south, both directions of I-476 will also see lane restrictions between the MacDade Boulevard and Baltimore Pike interchanges through Nether Providence, Springfield and Ridley townships.
Southbound I-95 will face a separate lane closure between the Stewart Avenue and I-476 interchanges in Ridley Township and Ridley Park Borough for Intelligent Transportation System repairs.
With multiple work zones operating during the same overnight hours, PennDOT warns that significant backups and delays may occur. Drivers should plan extra time and consider alternate routes when practical.
The I-476 work is part of a project to install Variable Speed Limit and Queue Warning systems along approximately 14.5 miles of the interstate in Delaware and Montgomery counties.
Crews are installing Intelligent Transportation System conduits, queue detectors, variable speed limit signs, dynamic message signs and related technology that will be controlled from PennDOT’s Regional Transportation Management Center.
The variable speed limit system will allow posted regulatory speeds to change based on real-time traffic, roadway and weather conditions. Queue Warning technology will display electronic alerts about significant slowdowns ahead, giving motorists more time to react and reducing the risk of sudden stops and rear-end crashes.
Kuharchik Construction Inc. of Exeter is the general contractor for the federally funded project.
All scheduled activities are weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled.
