WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Commuters in Southeastern Pennsylvania should prepare for significant travel disruptions as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) continues construction on Interstate 476. This $63.7 million project aims to enhance nearly 17 miles of the interstate, including its ramps and bridges, stretching from the I-76 interchange in West Conshohocken, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
From Monday, September 16, to Friday, September 20, nighttime lane closures will be enforced on sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges. These closures, scheduled from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, are necessary for paving, utility construction, and tree trimming efforts. Additionally, daytime lane closures with flagging will occur on Rose Valley Road in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for overhead bridge repairs.
The scope of this extensive project includes milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, and improving 21 stormwater management basins to tackle existing rock slope stabilization challenges. It also encompasses the repair of sound walls, replacement of drainage inlets, and installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail. The project’s overarching goal is to extend the interstate’s design life, enhance ride quality and safety, and address deteriorating roadside elements such as drainage systems and signage.
H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, is leading the project, which is entirely funded by federal resources. The completion of physical construction is anticipated by late 2025.
